The earth has its natural way of creating channels where the waters should flow. The body of water moves and forces its way on the surface of the earth, creating its journey it travels along. Every river has a source from where the waters come from and it also has a source to where it leads to.
I was sitting at a lodge overlooking the Crocodile River while it was flowing with meaning, making the calming noise, similar to what the ocean sounds like as the waves crashing on the shore. in wonder at God’s creativity and workmanship, His sovereignty and love for His creation. The river I was looking at wasn’t just a river, it was a river filled with life. This river gives and sustains life as it passes and flows where the channel leads it. Every plant, tree and the grass surrounding the river was green and full of life. It made me question where my river that portrays my life gets its water from, what is my source, where is my river flowing to, what impact does my river have on the route it is flowing and what does the end source look like?
So many questions ran through my mind and heart and made me realize that, when we are born again, there is a new river channel that forms within our spirits, the Holy Spirit comes and fills us and our rivers of life sustaining and life cleansing water starts flowing. John 7:38 says “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
All rivers have parts where the water runs deep and some areas it is just a shallow stream. The deep areas of our river channels need more water, it is areas that portray our pain and areas that once were dry empty holes, where we long to be healed. As our rivers are filled with the water of life, healing can start and those areas that once were dark and empty are now filled with the healing source and everything that rested in the dark holes can come to the surface and become part of the journey of the river. Our sinful nature starts going through a purification process and we become more and more like Jesus, as our hearts are open and repentant of what we were before Him. Our life becomes a spring of living water filled by a source that never runs empty and keeps giving day after day. Being filled with the river of life we can then start living a life that makes people thirsty to drink the water we are filled with, making them want the same. For Jesus Himself said in John 4:14 “but whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
May our life become a spring of water that feeds, inspires, cleanses and gives life as the journey of the engraved river path leads us.
